MenuRachel Black (Ph.D. Università degli Studi di Torino) is Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Connecticut College. She has conducted research in Italy, France, the United States and Canada, focusing on the production, distribution and consumption of food and what food can tell us about social organization, identity and cultural changes in Europe and North America. Black’s most recent ethnography, Porta Palazzo: The Anthropology of an Italian Market, examines the links between cuisine and cultural identity, culinary tourism, migration, and the connections between the farmers’ market and the production of local food at Porta Palazzo, Western Europe’s largest open-air market. Her current research focuses on female culinary professionals in Lyon, France.
