MenuJan Brooks is a Teaching Associate/instructor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the department of Human Development and Family students and also holds an affiliate appointment with the department of African Studies. She has been leading students abroad for 11 years. Jan was a member of the 2012 Faculty Academy for Global Engagement Program to Ghana as part of a College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences professional development program. She is also the 2014 NACTA Educator Award winner. Jan is passionate about teaching and her students, and this translates into her lectures in the classroom and abroad by the consistently high rankings by her students. Jan currently teaches HDFS 105 Life Span Human Development; HDFS 206 Early Childhood Curriculum Development; HDFS 208 Children and Families with Special Needs; HDFS 379 Study Abroad/Volunteer Experience in South Africa. She first developed the idea to lead a faculty-led program when she traveled to Capet Town to visit her daughter, a then undergraduate anthropology student at UIUC, who was on an exchange program at the University of Cape Town. In her free time, Jan is a board member and djembe player for the C-U West African Drum and Dance Collective.
