The Forum on Education Abroad and The New York Times in Education

Announce a Special Opportunity for Forum Members

Apply to Join The Forum/New York Times Collaborative

The Forum and the New York Times in Education invite Forum member institutions to join The Forum/New York Times Collaborative. Institutions that are chosen for the Collaborative will be able to assign selected faculty, staff, and students full access to the unparalleled resources of NYTimes.com for a 6-month trial to be used for summer education abroad programs and pre-departure and re-entry activities taking place from March-August 2016.

The Forum on Education Abroad and The New York Times in Education have been collaborating to develop a new and innovative resource for education abroad. The Education Abroad Digital Resource Center will utilize New York Times news, content, and archives that span 164 years to enhance education abroad learning, before, during and after the education abroad experience.

The Forum seeks a limited number of member institutions to participate in an effort to develop further content for this resource. Institutions and organizations of particular interest for this project include member organizations based outside of the U.S., community colleges, and minority-serving institutions.

Institutions/organizations chosen for this project will be able to assign selected faculty, staff, and students full access to the resources of NYTimes.com from February 15 – August 15, 2016. The full range of The New York Times resources will be made available: news, opinion and analysis in all content areas, searchable according to a program’s location and discipline, and in various media. To help users to draw on a wide range of material in the development of their courses and programs, including daily news briefs; political analysis and editorials on contemporary issues; book, film, art, and music reviews; and food and travel resources, participant institutions/organizations can have a Times representative host a workshop on their campus or via webinar on how to use the site and incorporate New York Times content into a curriculum.

By the end of the project, participants will be required to share at least three (3) examples of uses of The New York Times in education abroad coursework and programming for inclusion in the Education Abroad Digital Resource Center. The Education Abroad Digital Resource Center will be a user-friendly interface for faculty, staff, and students with customized guidance on how to use The New York Times for education abroad as well as best practice examples of how to apply these resources to advance student learning during pre-departure, on-site and re-entry education abroad programming.

Successful applicants must be able to:

    • Appoint a representative who will serve as the chief contact
    • Commit to the timeline below
    • Detail how many faculty members, staff and students are likely to be involved in using the NYT resources on an experimental basis during the 6-month trial period
    • Participate in webinars and/or have a representative travel to one or more meetings in New York or Pennsylvania in early 2016
    • Demonstrate a record of successful participation in past projects
    • Commit to sharing at least three (3) examples of uses of The New York Times in education abroad coursework and programming for inclusion in the Education Abroad Digital Resource Center by September 15, 2016.
