Recent years have seen international educators innovate and adopt various forms of global learning in response to the challenges faced by our field. What lessons did we learn from this spurt of creative energy? Which forms of virtual global learning earned a strategic place in our portfolios and why? How can we apply the lessons learned to carve a path forward to a more equitable and sustainable global earning landscape? Join us to reflect on this together.

GianMario Besana, DePaul University GianMario Besana is a Vincent de Paul Professor in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA, and currently serves at DePaul as Associate Provost for Global Engagement and Online Learning. His portfolio comprises the internationalization process of the institution and its online learning operations. The two sides of GianMario’s portfolio came together in 2013 with the creation of the Global Learning Experience (GLE) program, a virtual exchange initiative aimed at supporting DePaul’s faculty members who wish to open their classrooms to technology-facilitated learning experiences at a distance, in partnership with institutions all over the world.

The GLE initiative includes a professional development workshop for instructors, developed in collaboration with DePaul’s Center for Teaching and Learning, that has attracted national and international attention as a model for institutional support of virtual exchange. The GLE program was recognized in 2019 with the POD Innovation award and in 2020 with a NAFSA Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award for Campus Internationalization. DePaul has offered over 250 courses with GLE projects, in collaboration with institutions in 31 different nations and territories.

During the pandemic GianMario led DePaul’s Global Engagement team to develop innovative approaches to virtual global learning, including the Global Conversations series, Virtual Global Studies, and a program of virtual global internships. GianMario has facilitated workshops on institutional approaches to virtual exchange at several institutions around the world and has presented on the topic of virtual exchange at several conferences. GianMario earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame, IN, USA, after completing his bachelor degree, also in Mathematics, at the Universita’degli Studi di Milano, Italy. He has published widely in the field of algebraic geometry, applications to computer vision, and computer science education. GianMario is an alumnus of the first edition of the Senior International Officers Academy of the Association for International Education Administrators (AIEA), serves on the Executive Board of AIEA as a member at large and on the Steering Committee of the International Virtual Exchange Conference, IVEC.
