About This Workshop

Reports of mental health concerns are on the rise across campuses and on education abroad programs. Education abroad professionals need tools to support students of varying backgrounds and intersecting identities in managing their well-being while participating in education abroad. This workshop will highlight how to incorporate mental health as part of equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies.
Through case studies and group discussion, this workshop will introduce participants to current trends in student mental health, the intersectionality student identities, and how international educators can support underrepresented populations for success on education abroad.

 

What You Will Gain and How

This workshop features an opportunity to interact with educators and professionals who advocate and support various student populations with a focus on supporting successful education abroad experiences. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own practices, review case studies, and incorporate the knowledge gained for immediate action.

 

  • Understand the current trends in mental wellness concerns and insight into intersecting identities;
  • Learn strategies for supporting participants of varying identities at all stages of the life-cycle education abroad;
  • Knowledge of The Standards of Good Practice and how The Standards can inform program development, policy, and participant preparation on education abroad programs.

Breeda McGrath is an Associate Campus Dean for Online programs. She previously served as the Online Dean of Academic Affairs, Department Chair of the International Psychology Online, and Dean of Academic Affairs at the Chicago campus. Dr. McGrath joined The Chicago School in 2007. She earned her doctoral and master’s degrees in school psychology at Loyola University Chicago. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Nationally Certified School Psychologist, Dr. McGrath is active in a number of APA Divisions (Peace Psychology, International Psychology) and is an APA CRSPPP Commissioner. She is a certified trainer in the NASP School Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training Curriculum (PREPaRE) and previously worked as a psychologist in Illinois public schools. She provides training and consultation for the Young Center of Immigrant Children’s Rights and has established international collaborations Indonesia, Senegal, India, and Greece.

Dr. McGrath’s expertise in school psychology includes child development, social-emotional learning, trauma-informed care, educational disabilities, legal issues, and training. In clinical psychology and mental health, she specializes in anxiety, mood disorders, self-injury, cognitive behavioral therapy, cross-cultural considerations, assessment and psychological evaluation. Her experience in schools includes academic interventions, cognitive assessment, bullying, school violence, school supervision, school law and ethics, systems change, and international school psychology. Her expertise also includes bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, dysthymia, PTSD/trauma, crisis intervention, diversity issues, immigration, and identity development.
