What role does education abroad play in responding to climate change? The education abroad community has a responsibility to take urgent action to combat climate change. This workshop will address how to integrate climate focused measures into all aspects of education abroad programming, educate stakeholders on climate change mitigation, set realistic goals institutional responses and meet the expectations of students and the communities most impacted by climate change.
With a focus on the Administrative Framework section of the Guidelines for Advancing the UN SDGs through Education Abroad and SDG13, Climate Action, this workshop will provide you with concrete action steps that can be implemented in your institution to improve your efforts on climate change mitigation.

Who Should Attend This Workshop?
- Education abroad administrators
- Faculty who lead education abroad programs
- Onsite resident directors and staff
- Sustainability directors or officers
- Community engaged learning program managers
- Organizations that support education abroad such as insurance providers, travel organizations, tour operators, health provider professionals
- Community members such as internship or volunteer supervisors or home stay families
- Participants in the Professional Certification in Education Abroad program.
Learning Outcomes/How You’ll Benefit
- Understanding UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13), Climate Action, and its related targets and indicators.
- Articulating connections between SDG 13 and other SDGs, and how it contributes to “peace and prosperity for people and the planet through partnerships.”
- Proposing specific ways their education abroad programs could contribute to SDG 13, including:

- Integrating climate change measures into policies, strategies and planning
- Improving education, awareness-raising and institutional/organizational capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction
- Identifying accessible changes that can be made to education abroad programs in the short term to combat climate change.
- Learning how The Standards of Good Practice in Education Abroad and Code of Ethics in Education Abroad can inform climate focused decision-making and program development.
