Standards of Good Practice Institute

“Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety and Security”

Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois

June 24, 2011

The Forum is pleased to announce the second Standards of Good Practice Institute dedicated to health, safety and security in education abroad, to be held at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois on June 24, 2011. The first Institute dedicated to this topic was held in conjunction with the Forum Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC, and was ranked very highly by its participants.  This Institute will build on this success and offer participants the opportunity to broaden and deepen their knowledge and understanding of health, safety and security issues in education abroad, and hone their skills in implementing best practices.

The Institute will be dedicated to the health, safety and security incidents and issues faced on a daily basis by those working in education abroad.  Managing these issues and critical incidents generates specific concerns and questions about how best to improve program safety and security in order to mitigate risk. The Forum’s Standards of Good Practice provide benchmarks against which discussions can examine best practices in education abroad health, safety and security.  The practical, hands-on focus for this day will include multiple concurrent and plenary sessions that will allow participants to improve their institutional and organizational strategies for incident prevention and response. Standards Institute sessions are geared to experienced professionals, and assume participants have a level of knowledge “beyond the basics” of education abroad policy and practice.

The Institute will be limited to 150 participants, with Forum members receiving priority registration and a discounted rate.  Participants are encouraged to arrive on Thursday, June 23 in time for a reception at 7pm.  The most convenient airport is Chicago O’Hare.  Sessions will begin at 8am on Friday, June 24 and end by 4pm on that day.  All sessions will be held on the Northwestern University campus and a special Forum rate will be available at hotels within walking distance to the campus.  Participants who wish to enjoy Chicago for the weekend may extend their hotel stay at the special rate.

Session proposal forms are due November 15, 2010.

Registration opens on-line on January 31, 2011.
